At the moment you can't really. We are working on a new timeline within timeline feature that will come soon. This will allow you to create a group as n a new timeline.

Thanks for your quick response. Any idea when that will be available? I'm working with contents made up of multiple parts and having to move each individual part between timelines which is very time consuming. I've tried 'lassooing' and shift + select, to no avail.

You can only multi select using those features.
We hope it will be available for Hippo Animator 3 which has started development.
We expect that to be released in August or maybe September if it's not quite ready.
Groups are insanely complex to implement for many reasons. Especially when you export to HTML. We've got some clever guys working on it.
